Less than a week after being once again recognized as a top tier university by U.S. News & World Report, LSU’s enrollment numbers show that the university brought in its largest freshman class – at 5,725 students – since the university implemented admission standards in 1988.

“LSU is proud to welcome its largest freshman class, as academically prepared as any class before,” said LSU Interim System President and Interim Chancellor William Jenkins. “LSU is continuing to draw in the best and brightest.

“Now that these students are on campus, there’s still work to be done. LSU’s faculty and staff, along with numerous programs and services, are available to assist students to make sure they are successful in their educational endeavors. We will make every effort to retain these students and see them successfully complete their degrees at LSU.”

This year’s freshman class enrollment passes the previous high of 5,700 students in 2004. Last year, LSU welcomed its fourth largest freshman class of 5,290 students.

“As Louisiana’s Flagship University, it is important for us to be able to educate our citizens in these increasing numbers,” said LSU Executive Vice Chancellor & Provost Stuart Bell. “The many years of hard work and dedication of our faculty, staff and students in building our programs and our reputation were instrumental in us being able to welcome these high-quality students. We will all work hard to provide them with the quality education they deserve.”

The freshman class total of 5,725 students includes 333 freshmen who first enrolled in summer 2012 and continued in the fall and new freshmen who enrolled this fall.

The number does not include 442 non-degree seeking freshmen. Non-degree seeking students include co-op students, non-matriculating students and students taking a college level course while in high school.

LSU’s overall enrollment stands at 29,549, which is a 2 percent increase from 2011, when enrollment figures recorded 28,985 students. Overall undergraduate enrollment increased from 23,980 in 2011 to 24,641 in 2012, an increase of 3 percent and a difference of 651 students.

“I am so proud of the hard work of my team in the LSU Office of Enrollment Management,” said LSU Associate Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management David Kurpius. “Their efforts helped enroll a record incoming class. The interest in LSU has never been higher and even with recent tuition increases LSU remains an affordable option for students to earn a nationally recognized degree.”
