BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Dozens of children in the East Baton Rouge Parish school system met with crisis counselors today.
Although the shooting happened thousands of miles away many kids had questions about what happened and they're own safety.
Representatives from I-Care were at schools all across the parish today. Their executive director says making sure you're kids know they're safe is critical. It's also important to answer questions without going into every specific detail of the tragedy.
“What does the child want to know? What does the child need to know? And the guiding the length of time, answer the questions, reassure the child, do not cut them off, make sure there are opportunities for them to come back and ask additional question,” Norma Rutledge, Executive Director of the Baton Rouge Crisis Center, explained.
Rutledge says it's okay to mention the tragedy, and say children died. She says you shouldn't deny the event took place.
