LAFAYETTE, LA (NBC33) — Ali Roberts decided to spend her lunch time at the school her second-grade daughter attends. When she arrived at the school around 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23, her special lunch date quickly turned to shock when she witnessed the meals being distributed.
“It’s all brown – there was nothing green on the plate,” Roberts explained. “The only fruit on the plate was from a can. There was a corn dog and a vat of processed cheese sauce that’s used on nachos. The potato wedges were under cooked and cold. I was shocked.”
Roberts says she packs a lunch for her daughter every day, which she does at the request of her child. Until now, she never understood why she wanted a home cooked meal so much.
“I was kind of dumb founded when I saw the plates,” Roberts says. “I asked one kid if I could take a picture of her lunch. When I got back to work, I put labels on what everything was and started posting it around on the Internet.”
The picture is quickly going viral, and most seem to agree that the lunch is less than appetizing.
“This would be why kids can NOT pay attention in class,” Angee Marie, a Facebook user who commented on the photo, writes. “They are so bothered by the side effects from this repulsive and outrageous lunch. I now see why my youngest doesn’t eat that slop.”
Roberts says the high sodium and sugar content is not healthy for young minds. She does, however, feel the school provides a top notch education program.
“The school is great,” she says. “It’s a wonderful school in regards to the education. When it comes to how the teachers interact with the kids, it’s fabulous. But how can they learn all they are being taught if they don’t have the right fuel to power their brains.”
The school name is being excluded to protect the identity of the child.
