Kenilworth Science and Technology Charter School has posted a strong 7.4 percent increase in student enrollment for the 2013-14 school year, school officials reported Tuesday.

As of Monday, Kenilworth had enrolled 580 students in grades 6, 7 and 8. Last year's enrollment at the beginning of school was 540. The official enrollment count will be taken on October 1, but the current numbers indicate solid growth.

"Our emphasis on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education is attracting parents to Kenilworth," said Hazel Regis, assistant principal of the school. Regis also pointed out that about 90 percent of the students who attended 6th and 7th grades at Kenilworth last year have returned to the school this year. "The parents are happy with their children's academic progress."

Parents also are pleased that the school has posted its fourth consecutive year of academic growth as measured by the percentage of students performing at or above grade level. Figures from the state Department of Education show 59.4 percent of Kenilworth students achieved that mark at the end of the 2012-13 school year, compared to 53.3 percent in the previous year. That represents an 11 percent increase in proficiency since 2011-12 and a 46.3 percent growth since the school was converted to a charter school in 2009.
