BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — "Head Start," says Head Start student Felix.

He’s one of more than 150 kids at the newest Head Start on Progress Road in Baton Rouge. The three to five year olds will learn math and science.

That's not what he likes the most.

"Playing," he said.

Felix's Head Start teacher is Elena Herring. She knows how the program can makes a difference.

"You get to see the impact that you've made on their life and also on their family because here they have a lot of parental involvement,” says Herring.

One of those parents is Toya Domino. She has three kids in Head Start and one on the way. She's definitely seen her children grow in so many ways since they started the program.

"They speak better. Their interests are in school things more than their toys. They want to write. They want to write stories,” says Domino.

But they're not the only ones the program has changed.

"it's making me a better parent," says Domino.

And it's not just her. It's a transformation she's seen in lots of parents whose kids are in Head Start.

"I'm happy not just for myself but for other parents who may have made bad choices and may not have the funds to send their children to schools. This provides an option for them," says Domino.

And she should know. She used to be a teachers’ aide in Head Start. It's a change Herring sees every day with her three and four year olds. And it's the reason she's excited to go to work every day.

"I love it. It's my passion," says Herring.

And with this new Head Start facility now up and running. It’s a passion she'll get to share for years to come.

“We've been getting a lot of good positive feedback from the parents. So, overall I think it's going to be a success," states Herring.
