East Baton Rouge Parish, La (NBC33) — As the effort to incorporate the city of St. George gains support those opposed to the breakaway city and school district have started to raise some major questions of their own.
Robin Mangum lives in what could one day be the city of St. George, her son goes to a lab school in the East Baton Rouge school system that he would have to leave if the city and school district are created.
"What would happen to our son with the school that we love where he is, if the St. George district passes,” said Mangum.
Mangum is one of many parents questioning the proposed city.
"I don't think this proposed St. George district is as nicely wrapped up as they're selling it to the residents in those areas so we don't feel that's going to be beneficial to anyone," added Mangum.
Belinda Davis with One Community, One School District said the new city would come with too many unknowns.
"People are concerned that their taxes are going to go up and we don't know at this point because we don't know what kinds of services this new city is going to offer and we don't know what kind of school district they're going to have. And so people should be fearful that their taxes are going to go up. They need to show the people a budget," shared Davis.
Norman Browning has been one of the driving forces behind the incorporation effort. He said the new city already has a budget, one he thinks will work without raising taxes.
"Who wants more taxes? Come sit down with us, let us go over the figures, we'll show you that this city can be funded and funded accurately and that all your services will be there and we can do it better than the city of Baton Rouge," said Browning.
The petition to incorporate the city of St. George has 3,000 signatures, the group needs 25 percent of the voting population to get the issue on the ballot. There's no time limit for when those signatures need to be collected by.
