Food trucks from around Baton Rouge will gather tonight to help raise some dough for a local school.

The Baton Rouge Center for the Visual and Performing Arts will host the round-up on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 2040 S. Acadian Thruway. All of the participating vendors will donate 10 percent of their proceeds to the school.

“Typically, in the past, we have a fundraiser at a local restaurant and they donate part of the proceeds to the school at the end of the night,” Principal Mark Richterman explained. “Some of the parents have attended food truck round-ups around the city, and they thought this would be a good thing to try.”

This annual fundraiser is actually connected to a larger event held on the first Friday in November. Proceeds from that event go to a special need at the school. This year that will go to purchasing Junior Great Books, which will cost roughly $30,000.

“This year the Parent Teacher Organization will help us purchase the new instructional program,” he said. “In the past they’ve provided funds for to have interactive white boards placed in each of classrooms, add seven computers into every room, purchase the electronic sign we have out front of our school, and they helped build our amphitheater. They’ve also helped provide lots of technology, like microphones for all of our teachers.”

All of the independent fundraising helps the school stay in trend with current technology, which are all resources that would take much longer to obtain through parish funding.

Earlier this year the Baton Rouge Center for the Visual and Performing Arts was recognized by the Magnet Schools of America with the prestigious title of 2012 Magnet School of Excellence.

The food truck round-up will take place from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
