The Baton Rouge Area Chamber (BRAC) today released an education report card which analyzes K-12 performance in the Capital Region during the 2011-2012 school year. The report examines released data and performance scores to make clear the outcomes of the public schools in the Baton Rouge area and reviews overall regional performance.

“A quality public education system is a critical part of growing the economy throughout the region's nine parishes. Each year BRAC makes K-12 education a high priority and actively works for policies that support education reform,” said Adam Knapp, president and CEO of BRAC. “We produced this report to give business leaders, citizens, and parents a snapshot of our education system's performance last year.”

The report card shows that improvements are being made. All twelve districts in the region posted improvements and the East Baton Rouge Parish School System (EBRPSS) went from a “D” to a “C” rating in the 2011-2012 school year. The Capital Region is home to five of the top ten school districts and four of the seven “A” districts in the state. Additionally, almost 86 percent of public schools in the region improved compared with the 2010-2011 school year.

However, the region’s disparity shows there is a need for a faster rate of improvement. While we have some of the best schools in the state, thirty-five of the over two hundred schools in the region earned an “F” grade. Also, despite improvements in School Performance Scores and District Performance Scores, student college readiness has remained stagnant over the past five years as the region’s public school students’ average ACT scores continue to lag behind the average scores of both Louisiana and the nation.
