BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Due to a forecast of extremely cold temperatures, all schools in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System will delay their start of classes by two hours, tomorrow morning.
This includes elementary, middle, and high schools in the EBR Parish School System.
School Superintendent Dr. Bernard Taylor Jr, says the delay is designed to “protect our students from the unusually low temperatures that are predicted for the early morning hours, especially those who use school system transportation to get to school.”
Dr. Taylor explained that all schools in the EBR Parish School System, will open at their normal times because the EBR school board wants to accommodate students who normally walk to school or are taken to school by their parents. However, classes will not begin until two hours after their normal start times.
Also, all EBR school system transportation services will be delayed by two hours tomorrow morning. For example, if your student is picked up at the bus stop for 7 a.m., they will be picked up at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning.
The school system clarified that classes will be dismissed at their normal times tomorrow.
School meals, including breakfast, will still be served to students who normally participate in the meals program.
EBR School system officials say they have been checking all schools and facilities to ensure there is adequate heat in the buildings for the start of classes tomorrow. School system Transportation Department drivers and mechanics are reportedly checking all buses to ensure they will be operational during the predicted extreme cold temperatures.
Officials advise parents to dress their children warmly for tomorrow’s commute to school, including dressing them in layers with hats, gloves and scarves.
Officials also said there is a limited supply of cold weather clothing available to parents who don’t have adequate protective clothing for their children at their local schools. These parents are advised to contact their local schools for more information.
