Leaders of the East Baton Rouge School District are speaking out now over lawmakers’ decision to vote down bills that would create a breakaway school district.

The new school district would have been made up of ten schools with around 6,800 students from southeast Baton Rouge.

East Baton Rouge School Board President Barbara Freiberg released a statement, saying the proposed breakaway districts came at a bad time and that new incoming leadership will help bring about change for all Baton Rouge students.

Incoming Superintendent Bernard Taylor also released a statement saying quote:

"It is my intent that the district remains focused on working with every stakeholder in providing a high quality education for all students. One of my first priorities will be to work with the parents and community members in the southeast part of the parish in an effort to address concerns they may have."

On Friday, the House of Representatives voted down the proposed new school district 61-9.
