Drama students at McKinley Middle Magnet spent the weekend in downtown Baton Rouge holding a fundraiser and performing selections from their upcoming spring play.

It was a "Trash to Treasure" sale, held at the Baton Rouge Farmers Market. For weeks the kids collected garage sale items to sell at the event, and all the proceeds go towards buying new props and costumes for the school’s theatre department.

“The kids had a great time putting together their event, and learning about salesmanship,” Nikki Boyle, parent volunteer, said about the weekend. “They were so excited to mingle among the shoppers, give their pitches and negotiate prices.”

Along with the sale student’s had the chance to perform selections from their upcoming spring play, “Aida.”

“The performances were extremely well received by the crowd as well, and many people told me they were astonished by the abilities of our middle schoolers,” Boyle notes. “It was a great morning for all!”

The group raised over $500, which will go a long way towards keeping their program thriving.

“We are already looking forward to next year’s event and have new ideas in store,” Boyle concluded.
