Baton Rouge, La — Thanks to a Dollar General Literacy Foundation Grant entitled Tackling the Common Core Through Literacy, Southeast Middle School Science and Social Studies teachers will each receive a class set of high-interest, non-fiction and leveled books.
The grant, submitted by Dean of Students Corie Buras, aligns with the new Common Core State Standards that emphasize the integration of literacy strategies into science and social studies. The teachers will use the non-fiction books to promote reading comprehension and text analysis skills within their Science and Social Studies classes.
Since its founding in 1955, Dollar General has been committed to supporting literacy and education. To further this support, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation was established in 1993 to improve the functional literacy of adults and families by providing grants to nonprofit organizations dedicated to the advancement of literacy.
