BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The East Baton Rouge School System breakaway is picking up where they left off last year. Local Schools for Local Children updated the community on where they are in the process of breaking away from the public schools.

One father says, his main priority is for his daughter to receive a great education.

“The parents in this community, they want it," says Norman Browning, the President of Local Schools for Local Children.

It’s what Tyler Rogers wants, for the South East Baton Rouge School District to come to life, and prepare his daughter not only for the real world, but his whole family.

“I don't think all the public schools in East Baton Rouge are getting enough attention, attention for the students to excel to become better people and become more educated,” says Rogers.

From his experience he sees how this change will enhance the lives of the children in the area.

“Myself, my younger brother all went to Woodlawn and my niece and possibly my daughter that could end up going to Woodlawn,” noted Rogers.

And those involved with local schools for local children say after a fight in last years senate and the house, there is no doubt this will now succeed.

“For years the people here have been upset with the school system. It's no secret that the schools in this area have performed very well and the parents are upset and want community schools,” said Browning.

And by mirroring Zachary and Central School Systems, the Southeast Baton Rouge community is taking a proactive approach to an obvious problem.

"It’s one of those things. It’s about the future of our families and what Woodlawn will be whenever we get older," said Rogers.

Of course there were those in opposition in attendance, but failed to comment. The East Baton Rouge Public School System as well as parents of children in magnet schools are those among the people who are against Local Schools for Local Children.

The next step in the process is to send the bill to the Legislature this Spring.
