WALKER, LA — Students at South Fork Elementary School in Walker, LA got a special surprise when the Bloomin’ Hot Air Balloon and team made a special visit on October 8.
More than 440 students, faculty, and staff learned about various features of ballooning. The interactive presentation included a description of the scientific principles involved as well as a demonstration showing how the balloon, basket, and burners operate.
The Pilot of the Bloomin’ Balloon, Mr. Steve Esser, is also the grandfather of fifth and second grade students, Kirin and Kaeden Esser. Mr. Esser said, “It’s very special and I love doing it. It introduces aviation to the kids, but also there are a lot of basic principles that we can relate to the schools. There’s science, math, reading…it’s just wonderful and fun!” His fifth grade grandson, Kirin Esser, went on to say, “I think it was very good and a very special privilege!”
Each South Fork class had an opportunity to see the Bloomin’ Balloon up close and ask the Pilot specific questions about the various aspects of ballooning. Mrs. Lauren William’s fifth grade class got the special opportunity of assisting the Bloomin’ Balloon Team with the deflation and pack up of the basket, burner, and envelope. Mrs. Williams said, “My students learned it takes a large team to pack up a hot air balloon and that there’s a specific step by step process that must be followed. Most importantly they learned about the value of team work and I am very impressed and proud of how well they worked alongside the Bloomin’ Balloon Team.”
