BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — A house committee deferred a measure that would have limited how much assistance students get from TOPS.

The House Committee on Education deferred House Bill 294.

The bill would require the state to just pay $1,600 per semester per student.

It costs the state more than $150-million a year to put students through school.

One representative behind the bill says the state just can't afford it anymore.
