BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — This morning 636 students graduated from Southern University. The keynote speaker was a White House official who knows the Southern University system all too well.
John S. Wilson, Jr., the Executive Director of the White House Initiatives on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, gave the commencement address. As executive director, Wilson partners the White House, 32 federal agencies, private and philanthropic entities to work to assist 105 HBCUs across the country.
Prior to working with the White House Initiative on HBCUs, Wilson was an associate professor of higher education in the graduate school of education at the George Washington University. He also served as the executive dean of GWU’s Virginia Campus and helped to develop a strategic plan for the university.
Tonight on NBC33 News at 10:00 p.m., Matt Boudreaux will have a special report about one graduating senior who had more more than a busy day. That's because he's a pre-med student who's also a baseball player. Today, he missed one game for graduation, but tonight, he'll get a second chance to lead the Jag's to victory.
