BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board may shrink in size, but as of right now, members don't know how it's all going to turn out.
They are looking at five different plans. One of those plans cuts the size of the school board from 11 members to 9.
"One Community. One District" has already expressed their concerns saying, they are worried that some of the board members' voices won't be heard, but school board members have mixed views.
"Some believe that a nine member board would be easier to function," said Jill Dyason. "I do know we've had problems with can we all get together on this date to have a workshop. No, this one can't, this one can't, you know."
"I, of course, am against doing that because we just reapportioned ourselves, or redistricted ourselves at the end of 2012, and we have not even had those plans in effect yet," said Tarvald Smith. "The way the plans are drawn to be presented, they dilute certain minority voting rights, and I hope the plans will be challenged."
Members hope to come to a decision on this issue soon. It'll be on the agenda at next week's school board meeting on Thursday, July 24th.
