IBERVILLE PARISH, LA (NBC33) — A 24-year-old woman is in jail Saturday for negligent homicide, after her truck went over the side a bridge killing one of the passengers. It happened on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge Friday night. State Troopers are urging people to drive safely and slow down.
It's nearly twenty miles long. The Atchafalaya Basin Bridge is one of the longest bridges in the country. Drivers said they see accidents all the time, and some are deadly.
"I was shocked, very shocked. It's a tragedy," Clarance Depass said.
Depass said he drives this bridge all the time, but one of the biggest problems he sees is speeding.
"People do drive fast," Depass admitted.
State Troopers believe that was the cause of an accident that happened Friday night, killing one person. Troopers said the driver's truck struck a guardrail where it then flipped over and went off the bridge.
"That is a sad thing because any loss of life is not good," said Brian Guillory.
Drivers said that's why it's important to drive safely and take your time.
"Try not to drive and drink, and just be alert," Depass said.
"It does not surprise me," Guillory said. "Police can't be at every mile marker there. They can't be at every corner watching us. We also have to watch ourselves."
Six people were in the truck at the time of the accident. Lois Rudd was arrested for five counts of negligent injury, negligent homicide, and careless operation. Troopers said this crash is still under investigation.
