NBC NATIONAL NEWS — There's just one day left until voters in Arizona and Michigan decide who should challenge President Obama in the fall.
Mitt Romney's barely holding on to his lead in his home state of Michigan after a gaffe this weekend that raises questions about whether he can connect with working class voters.
"Love cars and sports. and I appreciate the spirit of the men and women who are driving today," Romney said during a stop at the rained-delayed Daytona 500.
But it's what mitt romney said off camera that has twitter buzzing this morning.
Asked if he's a NASCAR fan, Romney said he doesn't follow it closely but "I have some friends who are NASCAR team owners."
Rick Santorum, in Michigan, had his own race-day take on the state's Tuesday primary.
"Hang back there for awhile ..let all other cars in front of you wreck ....then run hard in last few laps and win the race," he laughed.
Sources tell NBC Santorum will get Secret Service protection, starting today.
What he did not get is a key endorsement from Arizona Governor Jan Brewer.
"I have decided that I am going to publicly endorse Mitt Romney. I think he's the man that carried the debate," Brewer said on "Meet The Press" Sunday.
Romney tells NBC he still thinks he can win the nomination.
