NBC NATIONAL NEWS — It's a super close race - Barack Obama just slightly ahead of Mitt Romney in three new polls.
The president backing gay marriage made no difference to 62 percent of voters, the rest split, in today's NBC News - Wall St. Journal survey.
What matters most is still the economy.
The pro-Romney group, run by Karl Rove, goes after the Obama record in a new $10 million ad campaign.
Just 20 percent, in the ABC poll, said they'd be better off if Romney were in charge.
But voters now see him understanding their problems as well as the president does. To counter that,
Team Obama's putting up two ads, charging Romney's investment firm, Bain, fired workers to boost profits.
Some democrats object to the Bain campaign, but the President says it reveals Romney did not focus on jobs, which could make a difference, in a race that right now is close to even.
The anti-Romney ads are harsh, but the new anti-Obama ad is not. Republican research finds voters who might decide to vote against Barack Obama still like him.
