Four LSU Black Male Leadership Initiative Fellows were recently selected to the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program.

Named for African-American astronaut and physicist Ronald Erwin McNair, who died during the launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986, the program promotes diversity of life experiences, cultures and perspectives in academia by providing support to 30 first-generation, low-income and underrepresented students from LSU, Southern University and Southeastern Louisiana University seeking admission to graduate school.

The fellows – De-André Beadle, a psychology major from Houston; Derrick Lathan, a graphic design major from Baton Rouge; Charles Lewis, a biology major from Atlanta; and Nickolas Grant, a psychology major from Baton Rouge – will participate in program activities that prepare them for graduate school, including faculty mentorship and research, regular one-on-one counseling with McNair Program staff and graduate school entrance exam preparation.

“Being accepted to be a part of the McNair Scholarship program is a blessing and an honor,” Grant said. “I will be given the chance to prove to myself and my family that I can be the best that I can be.”

In addition, the McNair Program provides a variety of resources, including funding for undergraduate research and access to laptop computers, iPads and digital cameras.

“Being chosen as a McNair Scholar is a huge honor,” said Lewis. “It means a lot to me because it shows that someone else, based solely on my credentials rather than an emotional connection, sees enough potential in me that they are willing to invest thousands of dollars in my future. I am confident that I will rise to the challenge.”
