BREAUX BRIDGE, La. (AP) - Authorities say a weekend fire that killed a woman and her adult son in a Breaux Bridge home appears to have been an accident. State Fire Marshal Butch Browning said the fire started Saturday
about 5 a.m.
Family members identified the victims as 62-year-old Mary Lucy Borel and her son, 41-year-old Johnny Borel. Julia Wiltz, who lives across the street from the house, said she and several other neighbors tried knocking on the door to help the Borels get out, but were held back by heavy smoke and flames.
Browning said it is unknown whether the home had smoke
detectors. That will be part of the investigation, as will other
tests and the results of autopsies on the victims.
