Pointe Coupee Deputies are still investigating the death of a four-year-old they say was brutally killed by his neighbor’s dogs. Investigators have determined there was no criminal intent, but are trying to decide if negligence played a role. Nearby residents say dangerous dogs in the parish are a bigger problem than many people believe.

Cathy Lopez says, “The first thing I did, my daughters were with me and I said see you guys something like this had to happen to get some help.” Lopez waited outside of the Pointe Coupee courthouse this morning waiting to hear the outcome of the investigation into a tragic incident where three dogs attacked and killed a four-year-old boy. “I live in a situation where my neighborhood has a lot of pit-bulls, they are pinned up but a couple are not.”

Lopez says her neighbor breeds these historically aggressive dogs and too often they make their way onto her property. “The dog jumped under the bottom of the fence and bit my son.” Today, investigators say the mauling appears to be a freak accident. “We have briefly met with the families of the victim, they understand what’s going on and they know no one is going to be arrested at this time.” Investigators are still collecting reports from all the agencies on the case and will make a final determination at that time.

Lopez says she has dogs of her own and she abides by the parish ordinance that requires her pets to be kept on a leash at all times. The recent attack has left many in the parish terrified and begging for stricter laws when it comes to loose pets. “I knew for nine years that something horrible like this was going to have to happen to wake the parish up to say ‘wait a minute we need to do more.’”

Pointe Coupee Sheriff Bud Torres says the dogs involved in the attack were taken away and will be put in confinement for an indefinite amount of time.
