BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — "Maintaining the safety of the roadway is the bottom line."
That is goal of a DOTD road worker, no matter where it takes them. but there are guidelines they follow, to keep them out of harms way.
"The main thing is that we try to tell them to be alert and be aware of the traffic at all times and never have their backs turned to traffic," said Todd Donmyer, an area engineer at DOTD.
But as we have learned in the past, sometimes even when road workers are being careful, accidents can happen. but DOTD still does its part.
"If we are working on the shoulder, we have advanced warning signs warning the public that there is shoulder work going on and that the shoulder is closed. We try to keep as much distance between our workers and traffic as possible, whatever the situation dictates," said Donmyer.
And when the weather brings dangerous driving conditions, DOTD will keep road work as simple as possible.
"A lot of times it's something as simple as unclogging a catch basin, in which case i'll just hop out my car and grab a shovel out of my truck and clear it out myself." Donmyer said.
But with all that being said, drivers still have a responsibility as well.
"Be aware when there is work going on and when there is road work ahead signs, to be more cautious, slow down and to look out for the workers and maintain the safety of the roadways."
