Holiday season "different"

VENICE, LA (WVLA) - Thomas Boyken has been a shrimper for over 35 years.  He's gone through life with a routine, and a plan.

But he says his plan changed 7 months ago when the Deepwater Horizon sunk and started leaking oil.

Boyken says he built his shrimp boat as a retirement present to himself.  But now, with lots of questions about what's in the water and the future of the shrimping industry, he's unsure he'll be able to have the time off hes' worked for.

He says the spill has kept him off the water for so long, he's not sure if his 24 grandkids will have Christmas presents this year - or if he'll even be able to get himself and his family through the winter.  But despite all the setbacks, Boyken is still smiling and cracking jokes.

He says his sense of humor is key in getting him through the Crisis on the Coast.  "You got to smile I mean - it doesn't do any good goin around feelin sorry for yourself", he says.
