PANAMA CITY, FL (WVLA)--A man cycling across the country to raise money for the Gulf Coast recovery has died.
Roger Grooters, 66, was killed while riding his bike on State Road 20 in Florida.
Florida Highway Patrol say, a man driving a pickup truck veered into the shoulder where Grooters was riding and hit him. Grooters was thrown into a ditch. EMS declared him dead on the scene.
Grooters launched a cross-country bike tour back in September. He was finishing up his last leg of the trek when he was killed.
Grooters spent five years at LSU as the executive director of the Cox Communications Center for Student Athletes.
Friend and former co-worker Tommy Karam was hit hard by the news.
"If you were sick, if you were hurt, and if you were his friend, he would be there," said Karam.
Grooters' funeral will be held on Monday, October, 11th at his home church in Gulf Breeze, Florida.
A local cycling group is dedicating a silent ride to Grooters on Sunday morning.
