Woman found in Lafayette park identified by Lafayette Police

Lafayette, LA (NBC33) — Lafayette Police have identified the woman found in Girard Park over the weekend as Alexandria Shelton, 21 of Lafayette, LA. Lafayette Police are continuing their investigation.
On April 13, 2014, at approximately 12:10 am, Lafayette Police responded to the 400 block of Girard Park Drive regarding a missing person’s report. The complainant advised officers that their 21 year old female friend was scheduled to meet them on Stewart Street in Lafayette, but never arrived. The complainant last contacted the victim at approximately 8:30 pm.
Three hours later the friends contacted the victim’s phone and a male answered. The male subject advised he found the phone in Girard Park. The friends went to Girard Park and recovered the phone from two male subjects and also located the victim’s vehicle. When police arrived a search of the park was conducted and the body of the victim was located near the pond in a drainage ditch.
The cause of death has not been determined. Detectives with the Lafayette Police Department identified and interviewed the two male subjects that located the victim’s phone. The subjects were able to provide investigators with specific information regarding the phone’s location. The investigation remains ongoing.
