Attorney General Buddy Caldwell announced today that a state grand jury in Winn Parish has returned an indictment charging Winn Parish Sheriff Alfred “Bodie” Little on three felony charges. These charges come on the heels of Little’s indictment on separate federal drug charges.

In last Wednesday’s three-count indictment, the first-term sheriff is accused of malfeasance in office, abuse of office and perjury, all felony charges. The malfeasance in office charge is related to Little’s arrest of a volunteer fireman who loaned a ladder to the State Police to assist them in a search warrant conducted on Little’s home in February of 2011, while the abuse of office count stems from the sheriff’s use of free inmate labor at his residence during the summer of 2010. The final charge of perjury involves the sheriff’s testimony at an April 2010 hearing where there were questions as to whether the sheriff had actually required a defendant to serve time in jail as had been previously ordered by a judge.

Each state charge carries the possibility of up to five years at hard labor and fines which could total $20,000. Bond has been set on the state charges at $40,000; however, a federal magistrate recently revoked the sheriff’s bond on his federal charges. Little is being detained in federal custody without bond pending his trial in federal court.

Prosecutor Hugo Holland of the Caddo Parish District Attorney’s Office has been appointed as a Special Assistant to the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office in the case.
