Victim of robbery at downtown gas station died; charges upgraded

BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The victim who was shot during a robbery attempt at a downtown gas station has died. Two suspects were quickly arrested after the incident and now their charges have been upgraded to First-Degree Murder.
The incident happened around 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 7 at the Chevron gas station on St. Ferdinand Street, which is located roughly three blocks away from BRPD headquarters. The victim, Bobby Nelson, 43, of Denham Springs, was confronted and robbed by two men. At some point one of the suspects pulled out a gun and shot Nelson.
When officers arrived to the scene they found Nelson on the ground. Initial reports from BRPD indicated that his wound seemed “non life threatening.”
Shortly after the shooting a BRPD K-9 officer tracked two suspects. Philip Carter, 21, and Robert Pierson, 17, both of Port Allen, were arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for Armed Robbery, Resisting Arrest, and Attempted First-Degree Murder.
The two suspects have been rebooked into EBR Parish Prison with the upgraded charge of First-Degree Murder, Resisting Arrest and Armed Robbery.
