Victim dies in Lafayette shooting, police looking for suspect

On July 28 at approximately 6:30 a.m., Lafayette Police responded to a residence in the 600 block of Goldman regarding a shooting. When officers arrived they discovered John J. Dean, 20, of Baton Rouge lying, in the yard with a single gunshot to the chest.

According to witnesses, the victim was at the door of the residence when a verbal argument occurred between himself and the suspect. 

During the argument the suspect produced a handgun, shot the victim and fled the scene.

Dean was transported to an area hospital; he died due to his injuries on July 29.  

 Detectives with the Lafayette Police Department have issued an arrest warrant for Second-Degree Murder for the arrest of Carl J. Phillips, 32, of Lafayette.

Anyone with information about the shooting or the whereabouts of Phillips is encouraged to call the Lafayette Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 232-TIPS.
