UPDATE: Doctors told WDSU both officers were likely to remain in the Intensive Care Unit for two-to-three days. One of the men sustained a gunshot wound to the liver and was in stable condition. The second officer was struck in the bowel area and was also stable.

One of the suspects was shot and killed, while a second suspect suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas. The body of the deceased man lay near a white sedan. At least one weapon was recovered at the scene.

Officials told WDSU the incident developed out of what began as a routine traffic stop.

ORIGINAL STORY: Two New Orleans police officers were shot Thursday morning and one suspect was killed in an exchange of gunfire near City Park in New Orleans.

The shootings happened about 5:30 a.m. by Toulouse Street and North Bernadotte. The officers were taken to University Hospital in were in emergency surgery.

Doctors told WDSU one of the men sustained a gunshot wound to the liver and was in stable condition. The second officer was struck in the bowel area and was also stable.

One of the suspects was shot and killed, while a second suspect suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas.

Officials told WDSU the incident developed out of what began as a routine traffic stop.

Two NOPD officers were shot near City Park Thursday morning.

Dozens of NOPD vehicles responded to University Hospital, Rosa Flores reported moments after the shootings. Others cordoned off the area where the gunfire broke out.

Witnesses said they heard a couple of shots -- followed by a long series of additional gunshots.

A manager at a fast food restaurant nearby told WDSU he knew the suspect who was killed and said he was an employee who was on his way to work. Officials have not identified him, nor the suspect who was injured.
