UPDATE: New Orleans woman leaves newborn child in backyard; child condition improves

New Orleans, La (NBC33) — THIS IS AN NBC33 NEWS UPDATE: The baby found abandoned in the Pearl River by his mother is no longer in critical condition, but still remains hospitalized.
Kimberly Lee, 35, was released from jail on Thursday, Jan. 19 and was taken to the St. Tammany Jail on two criminal charges; Cruelty to a Juvenile and Child Desertion.
NBC affiliate WDSU in New Orleans reports that a judge is expected to set a bond. St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Jack Strain said Lee gave birth to a boy Monday, Jan. 16 in the bathtub of her home near Pearl River. Strain said she then placed the baby in a towel and put him in the woods behind her home. The infant was discovered by Lee’s other children on Tuesday, Jan. 17.
Lee’s other children are now in the custody of another family member.
ORIGINAL STORY: Police say Kimberly Lee hid a pregnancy from her family, then left her newborn child in her backyard on Monday.
NOPD say the baby was found with the umbilical cord still attached.
The baby is in stable but critical condition; Lee is also in the hospital being treated.
She's expected to be charged with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile and child desertion when she's released.
