UPDATE - Grace deemed a 'flight risk', will stay in prison until sentencing
BATON ROUGE,LA (NBC33) — THIS IS AN NBC33 NEWS UPDATE: Former St. Gabriel Mayor George Grace will stay in jail until he is sentenced on July 2 becuase he has been deemed a flight risk.
Prosecutors said he's considered a flight risk because he owns property and has a bank account in the African country of Uganda.
There is also a fear he could commit the same crimes again.
ORIGINAL STORY (3/03/12): After three days of deliberation a jury has found former Saint Gabriel mayor George Grace guilty on seven counts.
These include racketeering, making false statements, wire and mail fraud charges. He is facing more than 100 years behind bars. The prosecution saying the conviction sends a strong message. Defense attorney Lewis Unglesby was confused by the jury's decision.
"We think that public corruption is incredibly detrimental to society and we will do whatever it takes to root it out," says U.S. Attorney Donald Cazayoux
"I'm a little confused When we started getting those not guiltys on the first page. There were counts I thought for sure we'd win. Some of the ones we won I wasn't as confident of. Some of the ones we lost I'm surprised about," says defense attorney Lewis Unglesby.
Grace was taken into custody shortly after the verdict because he was deemed a flight risk. His sentencing is scheduled for July 2.
