UPDATE: Corey Pittman, 33, was arrested on Saturday, Nov. 23, for the shooting and killing of Kenneth Barton that occurred on Cedar Avenue on November 22, 2013.

Pittman was apprehended during a traffic stop by State Police in St John Parish.

Pittman was brought back to Baton Rouge and will be booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for 1st Degree Murder.

This is an on going investigation with the possibility of other arrest.

UPDATE: The victim in this morning's shooting has been identified as, Kenneth Barton, 35, of Jackson, LA.

Police learned that several individuals forced their way into the home with the intent to rob the residents.

Barton was shot in the midsection as he fought with one of the robbers.

After being shot, Barton ran out the house and collapsed in large drainage ditch behind Cedar Avenue where he died from his injuries.

The suspects fled the scene on foot shortly after the shooting.

Baton Rouge Police are investigating a shooting that occurred early this morning in the 2700 block of Cedar Ave.

Police were dispatched around 6:15 a. m. on Friday morning in response to a disturbance.

While investigating the incident, police observed blood inside the residence and decided to canvass the area.

The body of a black male was found lying in a canal, deceased with a gunshot wound, a few hundred yards away from the home.

This is an ongoing investigation and the motive for this shooting is unknown at this time.
