VERMILION PARISH, LA (NBC33) — Quintylan Richard, 20, and Baylon Taylor, 19, are both in the Vermilion Parish Jail accused of shooting an off-duty Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Deputy who was cutting grass just south of Abbeville Monday afternoon.
It all happened just after 4:00 PM, Monday, near the intersection of Hospital Drive and Cougar Drive just south of the Abbeville City Limits. Multiple law enforcement agencies are involved in the investigation. The Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office reports the off-duty deputy called in 'suspicious activity' just after 4:00 PM on Monday. When other Vermilion Parish Deputies arrived at his location, they found him shot more than once. The Deputy was rushed to Abbeville General Hospital to be treated for the gunshot wounds, but he did not survive.
Louisiana State Police and the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office have not identified the Deputy, but family members say it was Deputy Allen Bares, Jr. who was killed. Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillion said he would formally identify the killed deputy in a Tuesday afternoon press conference.
Witnesses nearby reported to deputies they saw two black men crash a gold colored Lexus car into a ditch. Then, they reportedly told investigators the men stole Bares's pickup truck. Investigators found the stolen truck inside Abbeville city limits. What followed was a multi-agency man hunt. The city of Abbeville, LA, was placed under a curfew beginning at 9:00 PM, Monday night.
Ultimately, investigators arrested Quintylan Richard, 20, who's accused of shooting Bares. Richard is facing First Degree Murder, Unauthorized Use of a Moveable, and Simple Burglary charges. Richard was arrested at an apartment complex in Kaplan, LA.
Investigators also arrested Baylon Taylor, 19, in Abbeville, LA. Taylor is facing a First Degree Murder charge. Taylor is accused of being on the scene when Richard allegedly shot Bares. Multiple law enforcement agencies are continuing their investigation, and additional charges could be filed.
Tuesday afternoon, at approximately 1:00 PM, Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillion will release more details surrounding this ongoing investigation. We will continue to track this story and bring you new details as we are able to get them.
