A four vehicle fatal crash yesterday evening on LA 445 has left Troopers searching for a hit-and-run vehicle, possibly a Toyota pickup truck or SUV. The crash happened shortly after 8:30 p.m. on LA Hwy 445 approximately a mile north of Interstate 12 in Tangipahoa Parish.

Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that prior to the crash a Honda moped, operated by Chaz Brumfield, 33, of Robert, LA, was traveling south on LA 445 at a slow rate of speed with no headlights or taillights. As the Honda continued southbound, an unknown vehicle approached from the rear and struck the scooter ejecting Brumfield onto the roadway.

Upon coming to rest in the center of the highway, Brumfield was struck both by a northbound 2011 International 18 wheeler and a 2007 Toyota Camry as he lay across the roadway. Brumfield was not wearing a helmet and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office.

Troopers suspect Brumfield to have been impaired at the time of the crash with a toxicology analysis to be conducted at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.

Driver of the 2011 International 18 wheeler and driver of the 2007 Toyota Camry were properly restrained and received no injuries in the crash. Both drivers submitted to a breath alcohol test showing no detectable signs of alcohol.

Through evidence recovered at the scene, Troopers suspect the unknown hit-and-run vehicle to have damage to its left front fender and headlight assembly.

The investigation remains ongoing and anyone with information regarding the events of the crash or the hit and run vehicle is urged to contact Louisiana State Police Troop L at (985) 893-6250.
