Grade schools in the city of Thibodaux are currently being evacuated due to a threatening phone call that was made earlier this morning.

“We currently have K-9 units from all the agencies in the surrounding areas focused on the schools,” David Melancon, Thibodaux Police Department, explained. “This does not include Nichols State University. We are in contact with their police department and they are implementing their own plan. We are also keeping them updated with information.”

Officials say an anonymous caller made threats against the Lafourche Parish School Board as well as the local police department at around 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9. Authorities quickly responded by evacuating local government buildings and placed all schools on lock-down. Officers with the Thibodaux Police Department were deployed to area schools to ensure the safety of the students.

“Threats associated with schools and police departments are not taken lightly,” Melancon noted. “Anytime you have that kind of threat, you want to make sure you have the people safe and protected. It’s not taken lightly.”

The Lafourche Parish School Board made the decision to release students from the school at roughly 11:30 a.m.

“We have mobilized the K-9 units to conduct a more details search of every school,” Melancon noted. “We are not seeing any issues with traffic at this time.

“Officers are stations at various locations to stop any suspicious vehicles, or individuals who are walking, that come near those areas,” he added. “We’re taking every step we can and paying attention to every detail.”

Investigators are still working to track down the location of the phone call, as well as a suspect.

All schools in Lafourche Parish are currently on lock-down, but only those schools within Thibodaux city limits are being released.
