Four people were arrested and one was injured in a high-speed chase in Jefferson Parish on Monday afternoon, police said.

Sheriff Newell Normand said the chase began at about 1:22 p.m. in the 900 block of Manhattan Boulevard when a police officer tried to stop a 2005 Pontiac minivan that had been reported stolen.

The stolen vehicle sped away toward the Westbank Expressway, where a 15-year-old girl jumped out of the van and ran away near the intersection of Manhattan Boulevard and the Expressway, police said. The girl was later captured by police.

Investigators said the van sped away on the Westbank Expressway and headed toward the Crescent City Connection.

A pursuing police officer was nearly rammed by the vehicle near the Terry Parkway exit, according to a police report.

Police said the van hit the back of another van at the bottom of the Terry Parkway exit ramp, causing the vehicle to spin around.

Two 16-year-old boys fled the stolen vehicle and were later captured by police. One of the teens discarded a semi-automatic handgun, which was later recovered by investigators, police said.

A 17-year-old boy who was driving the stolen van was pinned inside the vehicle and had to be pulled from the driver's seat, police said. The teen had a concealed stolen handgun hidden under his leg, according to the police report. He was taken to University Hospital and was listed in critical condition.

A third handgun was also found lying next to the middle seat of the stolen vehicle.

The female driver of the van that was hit was also taken to a nearby hospital complaining of injuries she received in the crash.

All four suspects face numerous charges for possession of a stolen vehicle, multiple counts of resisting arrest, weapons violations and several traffic offenses.
