BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — UPDATE: The suspect has been identified as Stephen W. Sanchez, 28, of Baton Rouge. We’re told Sanchez initially pulled over when instructed by the LSU PD officer, but then took off after the officer exited his vehicle.
ORIGINAL: Multiple law enforcement agencies were called to assist with a police chase that began on LSU’s campus at around 4:00 p.m. Those who saw the incident say it was something surreal to witness.
"I've never seen so many cops in one place," a witness told NBC33 News. "It was like something you would see in a movie."
The entire incident started with a traffic stop on LSU's campus.
“One of our officer observed a pickup truck run through a barricade located at Highland Road and Tower Driver,” Cpt. Cory Lalonde, LSU Police Department, explained. “The officer attempted a traffic stop, but the suspect did not yield.”
The suspect continued to flee from police. When the chase exited LSU PD’s jurisdiction, the Baton Rouge Police Department and Sheriff’s Office were notified and assisted in the chase.
“The chase went through several areas of Baton Rouge, including parts of I-10 and 12,” Cpt. Lalonde, explained. “The vehicle eventually wrecked on Essen near I-12.”
EMS confirmed to NBC33 News that they were called to the scene for the wreck. However, the case was then turned over to the coroner’s office.
“Spike strips were deployed and the suspect’s driver side tire blew out,” Cpl. L’Jean McKneely, Baton Rouge Police Department, said. “The suspect crashed into a couple of other cars. The vehicle came to a stop and the suspect pulled out a gun and shot himself in the head.“
The suspects name has not yet been released. We will provide that information when it becomes available.
