Sulphur, LA middle school student arrested with gun on campus
Port Sulphur, La (KPLC) — Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's deputies arrested a 14-year-old middle school student Thursday for bringing a gun to school.
Officials at W. W. Lewis Middle School in Sulphur called authorities on Wednesday when students reported to the assistant principal that a male student had brought a gun to school and was showing it to other students.
Deputies were at the school Thursday morning when the student arrived and they found an unloaded handgun in the waistband of the student.
The student was booked with possession of a dangerous weapon on school grounds.
According to Principal Robert Barrentine, the school was prepared for whatever might have happened that morning.
"Going through the drills and things that we go through throughout the year as far as our crisis management plan, fire drills, all the drills, the lock down procedures that we go through, we felt like we were ready for that situation depending on, you know, what was going to take place that morning, we were ready," Barrentine said.
School officials said that they sent out a memo to parents shortly after the incident took place.
