Just as students were beginning the morning at Glen Oaks High School, a fight broke out and a student allegedly pulled out a gun. The student fled and the school was placed on lockdown by the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred shortly after 7:00 a.m. We’re told a student was involved in a fight and pulled out the gun. Deputies immediately placed the school on lockdown as a precautionary measure while they searched for the student responsible.

Roughly one hour after the search began, the lockdown was lifted. That’s because they located the student, Neil Harris, 17, near his home located on Skylark. A second student, De’rrell Haynes, 17, was also arrested for his involvement in the altercation.

Reports indicate that Harris and Haynes was involved in a verbal altercation yesterday as they were leaving the school. This morning, Haynes allegedly reignited the conflict and punched Harris. Harris allegedly pulled out an unloaded Lorcin 25 automatic. He then fled the grounds of the school.

When deputies located Harris he pointed out the location where he tossed the weapon. He told deputies that he anticipated a continued problem with Haynes, so he brought the unloaded weapon for protection.

Harris will be booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for Illegal Carrying of a Weapon on School Property and Aggravated Assault.

Haynes was also arrested and he is charged with Simple Battery.
