Southern University student victim of weekend crime

This is an NBC33 News update:  As of 12:45 am today, the East Baton Rouge Vilent Crime Unit with assistance of the Marshal's Fugative Task Force arrested Timothy W. Wsahington of Baton Rouge. He has been charged with second degree murder.

Washington is accused of murdering Sheena Marie Barnett on February 19th at her home on GSRI Rd.


UPDATED -- Students at Southern University are mourning the loss of one of their own. Sheena Barnett, 26, was found beaten to death and then burned Saturday afternoon at an appartment on GSRI. We talked to Mke "Puppy" Richard, who was a close friend of Barnett. The two worked together on music projects. We'll hear what he along with other students have to say about the tragedy tonight on NBC33 News at 5 and 10 p.m.

BATON ROUGE (NBC33) - Today someone started a fire on GSRI to cover up a killing.

It happened around 3:30 Saturday afternoon. East Baton Rouge Sheriff's were intially assisting in a fire, only to find a body inside the address.

Sheriff's deputies determined that the victim had been beat to death, and a fire had been set in the house to cover it up.

No motives or suspects have come forward in this case yet, anyone with information is asked to call the EBR sheriff's office, and Crime Stoppers (225) 344-STOP.
