Southern University student killed near campus

BATON ROUGE, La (NBC33) -- A prospective Southern University graduate was killed at Palisades Apartments, located right outside the Southern University campus.

Police responded to a call at 9:30 PM on Feb. 21, with witnesses claiming to have heard gunshots and screams.

Ferdinand Matthew Dorsey Jr., 22, and at least one other person were gunned down on the walkway of the third floor there.  

Baton Rouge officers state that the second victim had multiple gunshot wounds, but was taken to the hospital.  Dorsey passed away at the scene of the crime.

Dorsey was one sememster away from graduating, according to neighbors and friends;  he will be remembered to them as a big man with a big heart.

Detectives have interviewed several people, but no arrest has been made. A motive for the shooting has yet to be determined.

Southern University issued this statement regarding the student deaths: "The Southern University family extends its prayers and sympathies to the families and friends of Sheena Barnett and Ferdinand M. Dorsey Jr.," two of our students killed in recent days.

"While we are in mourning today, we will be focusing on how Southern University can assist in stemming the tide of senseless violence in our community."
