SLIDELL, LA (WDSU) — A gruesome discovery was made by St. Tammany sheriff’s deputies on Tuesday night.
The body of a man was found in an ice chest in his home in a putrid liquid state, investigators said, that had possibly been there for months.
The discovery was made in the 100 block of South Military Road.
Investigators said the man’s daughter told police about her father’s location and condition.
According to the woman, her father died some time ago, but instead of reporting the death at the time, the woman left her father on a bed in the home.
As the body began to decompose, police said, she cut off the hands and placed them in a box in her freezer. Police said the woman then put the 6-feet-tall 2-inch body in a 160 quart ice chest, which she kept in the home.
When deputies opened the ice chest, they found the man inside. Investigators said he had been there long enough that his body had begun to putrefy and assume a liquid state.
The remains were taken into possession by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner Peter Galvan. Investigators said Galvan will work to determine as much as possible about the circumstances surrounding the man's death -- if the condition of the remains allows it.
Detectives are looking into whether the daughter might have hidden her father's death for financial gain, such as continuing to spend his Social Security income.
