A Slidell man is facing several charges ranging from Aggravated Flight from an Officer to multiple counts of Child Abandonment after he fled from police twice in one week, leaving behind small children both times.

According to the Slidell Police Department, Steven Charles, 35, was involved in a hit and run car accident on Friday, May 2.

Charles ran from the crash on foot, leaving behind his wrecked vehicle. Police were surprised to find two small children under the age of five still in the back seat of Charles’s car.

The children were unharmed, and police returned them to their mother.

Slidell Police issued warrants for Charles for Hit and Run and Child Abandonment; however, Charles managed to avoid police for nearly a week.

A Slidell police officer eventually spotted Charles driving a black SUV tried to stop him. Charles sped away in the vehicle and led police on a chase through the Lakewood Subdivision.

When Charles came to the end of a dead-end street, he got out of the SUV and jumped into a nearby pond.

Officers soon caught Charles with the use of a K-9 dog.

This time, police were again shocked to find two different children, ages 2 and 4, left behind in the car.

These children were also unharmed, and officers returned them to their mother.

Charles is currently being held at the St. Tammany Parish Jail.
