A multi-agency operation has resulted in over thirty heroin arrests since February of this year by the Slidell Police Department.

In an effort to combat the rise of heroin use in and around the Slidell area, the St. Tammany Parish Narcotics Task Force, which consists of the Slidell Police Department, Mandeville Police Department, and the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office, has partnered with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in an attempt to target those who are trafficking and using the drug in and around St. Tammany Parish.

All three St. Tammany Parish law enforcement officials on the narcotics task force, Sheriff Jack Strain, Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith and Mandeville Police Chief Rick Richard, all agree, “Our goal is to be proactive and do everything we can to prevent this deadly drug from coming into our parish. We've seen several overdoses within the past couple of years, some fatal. Heroin also has a direct link to property crimes, such as thefts and burglaries. We all agreed about the importance of aggressively combating this issue."

So far, during the operation, thirty-five people have been arrested with charges ranging from simple possession to distribution of heroin.

“Heroin is a destructive poison that can cause terrible harm to the quality of life in any community”, said DEA Special Agent in Charge Keith Brown. “The arrests made in this operation are part of DEA’s continuing effort to target the distribution of heroin at all levels. We will continue to work side by side with our local law enforcement partners in order to enhance the quality of life for the citizens in St. Tammany Parish and the surrounding parishes in Louisiana,” said Brown.
