Jeovon Mitchell, 19, of New Orleans, is in jail and facing two counts of attempted first degree murder of a police officer, along with several other charges.

Slidell police received a tip that a stolen Jeep they were looking for was being driven around the Slidell area on a daily basis.

On Wednesday afternoon, an off-duty Slidell officer saw the stolen Jeep in a shopping center parking lot. The officer called to report the location of the vehicle.

When police arrived at the shopping center, the Jeep sped away from the scene.

Officers began to chase the vehicle, but backed off because of the many pedestrians in the parking lot. As a result, Mitchell was able to get away.

On Thursday evening, the same off-duty officer saw the stolen Jeep in a residential neighborhood. Mitchell was standing nearby.

As police approached the scene, Mitchell got into the Jeep and tried to drive away. In the process, he rammed two police cars with officers still inside of them. At one point Mitchell got trapped between the two police vehicles, but continued ramming them.

Fearing serious injury, the officers got out of their cars. They were able to open the door of the Jeep, even with Mitchell still actively trying to get away.

After Mitchell was taken into custody, police officers discovered that Mitchell’s three-month-old son was in the back seat of the Jeep. The infant was unrestrained during the incident, but received no injuries. Officers turned the baby over to the Department of Children and Family Services.

Inside of the vehicle were several small bags of marijuana, which lead police to think Mitchell was involved in a drug deal before they arrived.

Mitchell is now facing many charges and is currently being held at the Slidell City Jail. He will later be transferred to the St. Tammany Parish Jail, where a bond will be set.

Mitchell’s charges include:

  • Possession of stolen property over $500.00
  • Unauthorized use of a motor vehicle
  • Aggravated flight from an officer
  • Reckless operation of a motor vehicle
  • Resisting an officer with violence (5 counts)
  • Improper child passenger restraint
  • Possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute
  • Second degree cruelty to juveniles
  • Forgery (for an altered temporary license plate)
  • Criminal Damage (4 counts)
  • Attempted first degree murder (2 counts)
