Shooting suspect takes Iberia Sheriff on chase, ends with crash into apartment complex

NEW IBERIA, LA — Sheriff Louis Ackal advises that Deputies with the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s office apprehended a fleeing suspect after he shot at two vehicles in the City of New Iberia. The incident occurred at the 700 Block of Breaux Alley, New Iberia at approximately 12:05 p.m.
Witness advised that a male driving a red Ford Mustang drove down Breaux Alley, shot at two vehicles and then fled the area. Deputies were able to locate a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle driving South on Hopkins Street.
The suspect vehicle then attempted to evade deputies by turning onto West Admiral Doyle and then turning into Iberia Village Apartment Complex at 502 West Admiral Doyle. The suspect vehicle then crashed into one of the Apartment Buildings disabling the vehicle.
The suspect then exited the vehicle armed with a handgun and then dropped it onto the ground as the suspect fled on foot. Deputes chased the suspect as he was running through the complex and then jumped a wood fence separating Iberia Village Apartment Complex and T R Bob Apartment Complex.
The suspect was then apprehended after a brief foot pursuit. Joshua Smith, of New Iberia, was taken into custody and transported to the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office Patrol Center where he is being questioned by Detectives.
No injuries were sustained by any of the parties involved. The charges will follow once detectives have obtained all details of the incident.
