New Orleans (CNN) — The search for a missing 12-year-old girl in St. James Parish came to a tragic end on Sunday.
St. James Parish Sheriff Willy Martin found Talaija Dorsey himself in Vacherie, outside of New Orleans.
“Didn't end the way we was hoping. We worked hard and a lot of hopes and prayers since July 1. We looked at that smiling face every single day, and we let it drive us to continue working hard, and the search for Talaija ended today at about 10:20 a.m., and we found her body in a cane field, at the edge of a cane field or wooded area, about four miles from this location,” said Sheriff Martin at a press conference on Sunday.
Martin says the investigation isn’t over yet. An autopsy is still pending.
The 42-year-old boyfriend of the girl’s mother is in jail on an unrelated charge, but Sheriff Martin says he is now a suspect in the case.
Martin also said he believes the girl’s body was left at the crime scene on July 1, the day she disappeared.
