A toxicology report revealed that a Gonzales man had a blood alcohol level that was above the legal limit when he allegedly caused a crash that claimed the life of a woman.

The Louisiana State Police report that Ashton Claiborne, 29, was impaired when he passed a vehicle in a no passing zone and struck a commercial truck, causing it to strike a third vehicle. The crash happened on LA-73 north of US Hwy. 61 on Sept. 28 at approximately 6:30 a.m.

Although Claiborne was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, he only sustained moderate injuries. However, the driver of the third vehicle, Carolyn Brouillette, 56, of Prairieville, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver involved in the crash was also properly restrained and only sustained moderate injuries.

Claiborne was arrested on Wednesday, Oct. 3 for charges of DWI (second offense), Vehicular Homicide and Vehicular Negligent Injuring. He was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail.
